A search for transient, monochromatic light from the Galactic plane

چکیده
ABSTRACT The Galactic plane was searched for transient, monochromatic light at optical and near-IR wavelengths to detect pulses shorter than 1 s. An objective-prism Schmidt telescope of 0.28-m aperture a CMOS camera were used observe 973 square deg, with 8864 exposures 1-s each, within strip 2.1 deg wide along the plane, from longitude −4 +248 deg. All analysed sources using ‘difference image’ algorithm that yielded 11 candidate sources. found be associated either astrophysical emission-line objects or aircraft subsecond blinking lights. Our survey ‘rediscovered’ many Wolf–Rayet stars, M dwarf flare planetary nebulae. It also identified an aircraft, unknown type, apparently had nearly lamp xenon lamp. This would have revealed having power ∼180 GW (wavelength dependent) if emitted by 10-m laser located kiloparsec away. These non-detections including 10-deg region towards centre, add more 5000 nearby stars. Indeed, all-sky surveys (e.g. ionized gas, supernovae remnants, active galactic nuclei) lasers range average brightness, wavelength, cadence. absence beacons reveals SETI desert, notably intensely surveyed radio wavelengths.

Search for Gamma Ray Emission from Galactic Plane with Milagro
The majority of galactic gamma rays are produced by interaction of cosmic rays with matter. This results in a diffuse radiation concentrated in the galactic plane where the flux of cosmic rays and the density of material (mostly atomic, molecular and ionized hydrogen) is high. The interactions producing gamma rays include, among others, the decay of π’s produced in spallation reactions. Gamma e...
متن کاملA Search for Fast Pulsars along the Galactic Plane
We present results from a survey for fast pulsars at the Arecibo Observatory. Approximately 260 square degrees of sky were searched, primarily at Galactic latitude jbj < 8. Signals were sampled at intervals of 517 s, allowing for the possibility of detecting pulsars with periods as short as 1 ms or less. Sensitivity varied as a function of sky position. In a typical direction, long period pulsa...
متن کاملthe search for the self in becketts theatre: waiting for godot and endgame
this thesis is based upon the works of samuel beckett. one of the greatest writers of contemporary literature. here, i have tried to focus on one of the main themes in becketts works: the search for the real "me" or the real self, which is not only a problem to be solved for beckett man but also for each of us. i have tried to show becketts techniques in approaching this unattainable goal, base...
15 صفحه اولA Search for High-energy Muon Neutrinos from the Galactic Plane with AMANDA-II
Interactions of cosmic rays with the galactic interstellar medium produce high-energy neutrinos through the decay of charged pions and kaons. We report on a search with the AMANDA-II detector for muon neutrinos from the region of the galactic plane below the horizon from the South Pole (33◦ < galactic longitude< 213◦). Data from 2000 to 2003 were used for the search, representing a total of 807...
متن کاملA Search for Tev Emission from Unidentified Sources in the Galactic Plane
The ∼70 unidentified sources of the EGRET sky survey may be one of its most important legacies. The identification of these sources at other wavelengths is critical to understanding their nature. Many have flat spectra out to 10 GeV which, if extrapolated to TeV energies, would be easily detectable relative to the steeply falling diffuse background. The Whipple Observatory γ-ray telescope has b...
